Printed bags are very much the current vogue, as is the new deeper taller bag shape and deep tote styles.  Ogle the variety of decorative trimming on bags from sailor rope, bamboo, beading, gold studs or silver studs.  Frequently, headscarves or gold chain are slotted through its eyelets.  Handles may incorporate chain in twists with leather or be simply made of chain.  Many handles are made of plaited leather pieces and of course, seek out woven leather bags as shown below and in imitation of those made popular by Bottega Veneta.

The latest bags are so very busy that they are textured and embellished, even when inexpensive.  Raffia is over embroidered, studs and stones like turquoise are embedded in the extremities or even the main body of bag materials.  Leather and suede is frequently presented as washed and distressed, tie dyed, tool impressed, cut-out, frilled, made into rose trims and generally made of huge proportions.

This spring the current seasonal fashion trend is for the slouchy bag.  In 2006 it has fully integrated itself with the masses as a major fashion.  This fashion owes much to the Gucci Hobos, the Fendi Spy bag, the Chloé Paddington and the Silverado.

Pockets on Bags

These two pocketed bags, images below are courtesy of Debenhams and both are very attractive examples of pocketed bags.  They retain an element of neatness missing on some bags smothered in oversized locks and bulky extra end pockets.  The pink bag is a Designers at Debenhams model by Jasper Conran and is one of my favourite summer bags this year, it is also  affordable at £55.  This bag would work well with all the tones used in the colours of Blush Looks for spring.

A shirt, or dress shirt in American English, (also button-front or button-up shirt) is a garment with a collar, a full-length opening at the front from the collar to the hem, and sleeves with cuffs. Shirts are predominantly used by men, since women usually wear blouses. The front opening is fastened using buttons or studs, and the cuffs close with buttons or cuff links. Shirts are normally made from woven cloth, and are often accompanied by a jacket and tie, for example with a suit or formalwear, but shirts are also worn more casually. In British English, dress shirt means specifically the more formal evening garment worn with black- or white- tie, also discussed below. Some of these formal shirts have stiff fronts and detachable collars attached with collar studs. “Button-down” is sometimes used incorrectly to describe the front buttoning of a shirt; a “button-down” shirt refers to a shirt with an American “button-down” collar introduced by Brooks Brothers in 1896, discussed below.

There is much speculation as to where the kebaya could have originated from. There are some who say that the kebaya originated in the Middle East, while others argue that it may have come from nearby China. Derived from the Arabic word kaba meaning “clothing” and introduced to Indonesia via the Portuguese language, the term kebaya has come to refer to a garment whose origins appear to be a blouse. It was first worn in Indonesia at some time during the 15th and 16th centuries. This garment is similar to what is described as a “long, fitted, flared kebaya known as kebaya panjang6, worn in the 16th century by Portuguese women arriving on the south-western coast of Malaysia, situated across the Malacca Straits from Sumatra, in northwestern Indonesia.

Many sources also cite Chinese influences on clothing of the time, one source comparing the kebaya to an open-fronted long-sleeved tunic worn by women of the Ming Dynasty. The introduction of this kind of dress were accredited to two major occurrences of this time; the emerging influence of Islam and the arrival of the Europeans to the archipelago. Whether it was Arabia or China that brought us the wonderful kebaya, there is no denying how quick the use of this garment was made uniquely Indonesian and spread from one island and ethnic group to another which its own regional variations. This quick diffusion of the use of the kebaya was also linked to the spice trade that was happening during this time in history.
